State Recognizes The Millworks as Eco-Conscious
The California State Attorney General's office points to The Millworks/Whole Foods development as a project for other cities to emulate. The reason? The mixed use nature of the site (commercial/residential) promotes the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, something the state is increasingly intent upon mandating.
The Millworks developer told The Novato Advance (the local newspaper) that the project will exceed existing green standards once completed. "It surpasses any required standard. It'll be Energy Star rated... one of the greenest structures and most sustainable structures built, and it'll be healthy. We're paying close attention to air quality and reducing chemicals normally found in paint."
What's more, he said, the nature of the project is green - 124 homes all built on one existing site, instead of built apart. Plus, the fact that it's over a grocery store and close to other shopping reduces car trips.
